Women's Sport Sock – Specifically Designed For Women Everywhere

Men and women are different from their heads to their toes. And, although they enjoy many of the same athletic endeavors, their sports socks need to be different to accommodate for the differences in their feet.

That is the message sports socks manufacturers around the country are using to promote one of the biggest trends retailers will see in the sports sock sector for this spring and summer: sports socks designed specifically for women’s feet.

A lot of people market products to women, but it is just a women’s package with a size medium sock in it. We wanted a sock that is made for women’s feet.

Although sports socks for women are not a new concept, the idea that women’s feet are so uniquely different than men’s and need socks designed specifically for those differences is taking on new importance.

Marketing sport-specific socks for women surfaced well before 2002, but its importance took on a new meaning in the 21st Century. The difference is construction specifications engineered for her.

Women’s toes, heels, ankles and calves are shaped differently than men’s, say manufacturers. Therefore, their socks need to be specially designed to insure comfort and fit. Manufactures are concentrating on the toe boxes and heels to better fit women’s feet, they say.

Activity-specific sock maker Thor•Lo of Statesville, NC puts it simply: Women’s products are necessary because a woman’s foot is shaped differently from a man’s.

Thor•Lo has found that: Women have thicker ankles and calves. Their ankles are about a half a centimeter nearer the ground. Their heels are narrower, and the ball of a woman’s foot is wider with bigger ball girth. Their arches are higher, translating into a more rigid foot, which means that proper cushioning and fit are imperative, says the company.

Fox River, which first introduced its women’s line last year, asked women what they liked and disliked about sports socks. Like men, women said they liked the performance aspects such as moisture wicking, but they said they would like the socks to fit their feet better.

They said the fit is what drives them crazy, the toes are too big and boxy and too square. The socks are continually bunching up around their toes. And, the heels are in the wrong place, the women said. Also, a man’s calf is different than a woman’s –it is a little higher up on the leg and has a little more mass, while a woman’s calf is longer and more narrow so the crew sock needed to be shorter.

Fox River is using the Mars and Venus concept to market its Fox River for Women program, which features uniquely designed rounded toe boxes and flex-stretch heels for women.

Lets face it, our feet are different, the sports socks manufacturer tells women. We have rounder toe areas and narrower heels.

The Fox River Women’s line, which includes an athletic program made of Solutia’s Ginny acrylic fiber and an outdoor line of merino wool, was so successful the manufacturer expanded it for 2002.

The athletic program, which includes sports-specific socks for running, walking and golf, as well as a fitness sock and a court sock, was expanded for 2002 to include a cycling sock. New for this year in the outdoor program is a light hiking crew, a hiking sock and a backpacking sock.

Moretz Sports has introduced a new line specifically for women under its Power Sox brand.

The collection of women’s walking and running socks allows maximum performance through precision fit, sizing and comfort, they are constructed with two key performance fibers, CoolMax and Duraspun acrylic.

The line includes the Elite, which is a women’s walking no-show that features Duraspun acrylic construction, a spandex arch support, flat seam construction with fitted heel and toe pockets. The Women’s Active line includes a crew, a low-cut and a triple roll, each with a tri-layer construction that features Lycra 3-D layered between soft ring spun cotton for comfort as well as full-cushion padding, welt construction and the fitted heel and toe pockets.

Thor•Lo has declared the year 2002 as Thor•Lo’s Year of the Woman and has introduced three new models of women’s sports socks: Women’s Wool Silk Light Hiker, Light Hiker CoolMax mini crew, and Hiker THOR•LON. The company already had a Women’s Light Hiker and Lite Running and Walking styles.

Women’s socks are our main focus for 2002, Thor•lo’s women’s outdoor socks have a narrower heel pocket to fit a smaller heel, and extra elastic was added to insure a secure fit on the ankle and arch area, and to keep the sock positioned in boots and shoes.

The new Women’s Wool Silk Light Hiker blends wool for warmth and silk for a soft hand with Thor•lo’s proprietary blend THOR•LON for its wicking and padding properties. The Women’s Hiker THOR•LON uses the proprietary yarn in a midweight sock, and the Women’s Light Hiker CoolMax is designed with CoolMax for wicking and blister reduction.
