Men's Dress Sock – Slightly Modified Tuxedo

For most weddings today, the groom, his attendants, and the fathers of the bride and groom all wear matching tuxedos. However, sometimes the groom will wear a slightly modified version of the same tuxedo. Older ring bearers usually wear a scaled-down version of the other men’s formalwear, while younger ring bearers might wear cotton or wool Eton suits with short pants and knee socks, or for very formal weddings…silk or velvet pantaloons with a silk shirt. Often times colored accessories will match the bridesmaid’s dresses.

The men’s formal wear really depends on the type of wedding you are having. Some suggestions include:

Very Formal (before 6:00 P.M.) - Black or gray cutaway (morning) coat, gray and black striped trousers, gray waistcoat, formal white shirt with wing collar, striped ascot, gray cloves, black shoes, black socks.

Very Formal (after 6:00 P.M.) - Black tailcoat, satin-trimmed trousers, white pique waistcoat, stiff-front shirt with wing collar and French cuffs, studs (cuff links), white pique bow tie, white cloves, patent leather shoes, black socks. Top hats are optional.

Formal Evening - Black or charcoal gray dinner jacket, matching trousers, white pleated-front shirt with turned-down or wing collar and French cuffs, black bow tie, black (or patterned) vest or cummerbund, black shoes, black socks.

Traditional Formal Daytime - Black or gray stroller (walking coat), striped trousers, gray waistcoat, white shirt with turned-down collar, striped tie, black shoes, black socks, gray gloves (optional).

Contemporary Formal Daytime - Formal white (or other light color) suit for summer or darker color for fall, dress shirt, bow tie, vest or cummerbund.

Traditional Semi-Formal - Solid dark suit, plain white shirt, four-in-hand tie, black shoes, long socks.

Contemporary Semi-Formal - Dinner jacket with dress pants or formal suit, dress shirt, bow tie, vest or cummerbund. For Summer, white linen jackets, black or gray trousers.

Informal - Stylish suit or jacket with slacks, dress shirt, tie, dress shoes, dress socks.

Of course, these are only suggestions. You may want to mix and match ideas from different styles or consider the other accessories that are available, such as:

* Suspenders
* Pocket square (handkerchief)
* Various shirt collar styles (laydown, winged, turned-down, stiff-front)
