Hockey Socks – Not Really Socks at All

Many players, especially the professional players do not even wear socks when they are playing hockey on their feet. In fact hockey socks are really long leggings that fit over the legs and hold the shin pads in place so they do not slide around on the players legs. Professional hockey players will purchase skates that will fit their feet perfectly so that there is no rubbing or irritation, however, for non-professionals, most people will wear socks and it is especially important to wear socks that match your feet and the skates that you are going to be wearing.

Skates must be tight as they need to provide a lot of ankle support. Since the skates are so tight, it is important to have a well padded uniform pair of socks that fit well in the skate and at the same time keep the player's foot dry and cool. The hockey sock that fit over the lower legs and upper legs are usually the team’s colors and match the player’s jersey. If you have any doubt about the color of the socks to purchase check with the team coach or one of the managers. They can recommend which socks your team is buying.

Some teams will order custom socks for their hockey teams and each player needs to ensure that they are measured and the right size of sock is purchased for them. Hockey socks are not one size fits all, since players are different heights and sizes. In addition, your socks for hockey must fit over your shin pads, and some pads are larger than others, so you will need to also purchase socks for hockey with this in mind.
