Compression Flight Sock – Ward Off Blood Clots |

October 23, 2003 By: Rony Swede Compression Flight Sock – Ward Off Blood ClotsThat's what one hosiery company hopes your list of carry-on items will soon include. Potentially fatal blood clotting, known as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT -- thought to be a danger among fliers who sit inactive during long flights -- is drawing increased attention since the death of a passenger last October. Appealing to concerned fliers, Wolford America is introducing compression stockings for men and women in department stores and airport shops, and on select Swissair, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific flights. The nylon-and-cotton leggings, called Long Distance, are tightest at the ankles and knees to encourage blood flow away from the feet and toward the heart. Wolford isn't the only company hoping to cash in on DVT fears. Medical Dynamics in San Francisco just rolled out a home-use version of its prescription-only pneumatic slippers, which massage the feet using a small air pump. It requires a power outlet, but an official says the company is racing to introduce a battery-powered version for in-flight use by next year. How concerned should fliers be about DVT? It's overplayed by the media. The recent poll of 800 doctors showed that not a single one had ever diagnosed a blood clot during an in-flight medical emergency. When looking at the actual numbers, they're vanishingly small. Also see; diabetic socks.About
