No one is better qualified than Kathleen Hird to promote the benefits of natural, British Wool. Her family grows tonnes of it! Kathleen has just taken over the running of small Dales business, established nearly 30 years ago to inject some prosperity into Swaledale by encouraging local skills and promoting local wool. Her husband, Kenneth, assisted by sons Roger and Guy, keep 1000 breeding Swaledale ewes on the North Yorkshire hills. The family know and understand that the bulky, hard wearing wool grown by the sheep will protect the animals from the harshest weather. As the new proprietor of Swaledale Woollens, in the attractive village of Muker, Kathleen aims to make sure visitors to the Yorkshire Dales, particularly walkers, also understand. There is nothing better for keeping out the cold and turning the weather than a wool sweater or socks. Some of the customers have been buying from the business for years. The trouble is, good Swaledale doesn't wear out quickly enough! The craft of hand knitting has been passed down the generations in Swaledale since Elizabethan times, when lead miners would supplement their income by knitting stockings favoured by the monarch. For the past thirty years a team of conscientious knitters has been supplying traditional hand knitted sweaters, socks and gloves to be sold out of the shop in Muker, and more recently via mail order and the Internet. Thanks to the wool's ability to 'breathe', Swaledale sweaters have even found their way to Saudi Arabia, where they ward off the cool of the night! However, selling British Wool to Dales visitors in the height of summer is not easy and, while keen to maintain a place for traditional woollen garments, Kathleen realises she also has to widen her customer appeal. She is, therefore, working to extend her range of stock and to introduce contemporary, more fashionable designs using finer and softer yarns. Also see; knee high socks.About
