History

Socks have been a part of history since they became style in the middle ages. Although cloth and hide have long been used to protect the legs, it wasn’t until the middle ages that ‘hose’ was fitted to the calf.

As the style of clothing evolved, so did stockings. Shorter breeches meant longer hose, which eventually extended to the foot. In 1490 breeches and hose were created as one, becoming the first style of tights, as we know them today.

Tights soon became quite a fashion statement, especially in 15th century Scotland and France. Made of materials like silk, wool and velvet, tights were soon sold in many different colors.

In the late 17th century, cotton became the most used material in socks and it remains that way to this day. Since then, nylon has also been introduced as a strong, elastic fabric used to create a sheer look in woman’s leggings.

Stockings became socks and the rest, as they say, is history.
